Pulse production has continued to decline over the last few years while the country remains a top importer of dry peas and mung beans.

Senegalese cowpea production is estimated at 152,000 MT in the 2022/23 December- November marketing year (MY), a 36 percent decline from the previous year.

Approximately 10 percent of arable land is used for agriculture, with food production falling short of consumer demand, making Angola reliant on imports to meet its needs.

Commercial dry bean production in Ghana is limited to cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), which has two sub-species with commercial value in Ghana; the black-eyed pea, which is the most popularly grown sub-species in Ghana, and the red/dark brown sub-species.

China’s marketing year (MY) 2021/2022 (September – August) kidney bean production is estimated at 250,000 metric tons (MT), down 15 percent on lower area harvested.

Global lentil exports in 2020 jumped from $1 billion to $2.6 billion compared to the year before. Canada and Australia led the surge, accounting for more than three-fourths of the exports. Lentil exports peaked at $2.7 billion in 2015 but drifted lower through 2019, primarily due to reduced shipments from Canada to India and Turkey and from the United States to Canada and India.

South Africa’s production and imports of dry beans have been declining over the past decade, but dry beans will continue to be a small but important niche market.
