Egypt: Retail Foods

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

The Egyptian population is young and growing. As such, demand for food products is high and expected to rise in the coming years. Egypt recently implemented a series of economic policy reforms, which are expected to stimulate economic growth and eventually lead to increased purchasing power. Supermarket chains have opened hundreds of new outlets over the past few years, hoping to capitalize on growing demand. In spite of the growth of supermarkets, the Egyptian retail food sector continues to be dominated by traditional markets. US products face stiff competition from European suppliers and from processors in the Gulf region including Saudi Arabia and the UAE; however, opportunities exist for US companies.
