New Zealand continues to be an important market for U.S. agricultural exports. In 2024, New Zealand’s imports of U.S. agricultural products rose by $50 million compared to 2023 to $571 million.

New Zealand: New Zealand Government Introduces Legislation to Restrict Farm-to-Forest Conversions
The Government of New Zealand has introduced new legislation to the House of Representatives to ban large scale farm-to-forestry conversions.
New Zealand fluid milk production is estimated at 21.7 million metric tons (MMT) for the 2025 market year (MY). This is slightly above the previous 5-year average of 21.6 MMT and a slight increase compared to MY 2024.

With research and development funds provided by the FAS Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops Program, FAS and ARS are working to produce compostable PLU labels. They are collaborating with the International Fresh Produce Association and Sinclair Systems International to meet the EU standards. The goal is to develop adhesives that are both food-safe and compostable. When achieved, this will allow American companies to export fruits and vegetables as usual while helping to decrease food waste and methane emissions.
