Romania continues to be a growing market for U.S. food and agriculture exports. Romania’s total resident population was just over 19 million people as of early 2024, representing a marginal decrease from the previous year, with about 48 percent still living in rural areas.

Poland is Central and Eastern Europe’s largest market for food and beverage products. With a population of 38 million people, Poland is a growing market for U.S. food and agricultural products.

For year 2025, FAS Warsaw forecasts Poland’s total cherry production at 115,000 metric tons (MT), consisting of 80,000 sour cherries and 35,000 of sweet cherries.

According to Romania’s National Institute of Statistics (NIS), Romania imported $184 million of U.S. food and agricultural products in 2024. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (USCB), U.S. suppliers shipped $68 million worth of food and agricultural products to Romania in 2024.

Poland is the largest EU poultry meat producer, accounting for 21 percent of total EU production. Despite expectations for rising poultry production in 2025 due to growing demand and lower production costs, the spread of animal diseases throughout the country in March and April 2025 have begun to weigh on Polish production.

On April 2, 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s State Veterinary Office introduced precautionary measures to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease by requiring FMD-free certification for imported live cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats, and establishing disinfection barriers at border crossings.

Romania applies European Union (EU) regulations on imports of animal and non-animal products from the United States. The legislation on export certification is generally harmonized at the EU level.

Poland is a European Union (EU) Member State and applies all EU regulations pertaining to imports of food and feed products. U.S. food and feed suppliers to Poland should verify with local importers and appropriate U.S. regulatory agencies regarding the most current local requirements prior to shipment.
