Bulgaria is a small but growing market for U.S. food and agricultural products. In 2022, total Bulgarian food and agricultural imports were valued at $8.48 billion, up 38 percent from 2021, of which 1.1 percent, or $92.2 million, were sourced from the United States.
The EU-28 sugar production for food purposes for MY 2016/17 is forecast at 16.5 million MT in raw sugar equivalent (RSE), with another 0.9 million MT produced for industrial purposes.
Bulgarian farmers increased wheat planted area in MY2016/17 by 9% as of December 2015. Winter barley planting had a decline of 2.2%.
Following a double digit decline in total oilseed production in MY2015/16 due to summer heat and drought, Bulgarian farmers are ready to expand planted areas under sunflower and rapeseed in MY2016/17.
