Italy is the second largest hazelnut producer in the world ahead of the United States, but behind Turkey, whose huge supply dominates the world market.
The United States is the most important supplier of nuts to the European Union, which imported $2.3 billion of tree nuts in 2013, of which $1.4 billion were almonds.
