FAS New Delhi projects India's sugar production to reach 35 million metric tons raw value (MMT-RV) for the marketing year (MY) 2025/26, reflecting a 26 percent increase from the revised estimate of the current year.

FAS/Nairobi forecasts a 19.8 percent drop in Kenya’s MY 2025/26 sugar production to 650,000 metric tons, from 810,000 metric ton (MT) in MY 2024/25, on an expected reduction in harvested area and lower sugar extraction rates.

Sugar production in 2025/26 is projected to reach 6.6 million tons, which is 13.7 percent higher than the 2024/25 estimated production. This increase is based on expectations for improved sugar content and average cane yield.

Post raised the forecast for India’s centrifugal sugar production in marketing year (MY) 2024/2025 (October-September) to 35.5 million metric tons (MMT), due to adequate rainfall from the 2024 southwest monsoon.

With the outlook for the sugar industry largely unchanged from the previous report, no significant changes are made to the supply and demand tables.

Kenya’s sugar production is expected to increase 40 percent in marketing year (MY) 2024/25 to 750,000 metric tons (MT) due to an increase in area harvested after the expiration of a ban on sugarcane harvesting issued by Kenya’s Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA).

India’s centrifugal sugar production in marketing year (MY) 2024/2025 (October-September) is forecast to reach 34.5 million metric tons (MMT), equivalent to 33 MMT of crystal white sugar.

Due to a slight increase in cane area and production, sugar production in 2024/25 is forecast to reach 6.8 million tons, 3 percent higher than 2023/24. In line with population growth and demand from the food processing sector, continued moderate growth in sugar consumption is forecast.

Report highlights: On June 28, 2023, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs updated its Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane marketing year (MY) 2023/2024 from INR 305 per quintal (USD $3.72/quintal) to a new high of INR 315 per quintal (USD $3.84/quintal).
