With a 1,566-kilometer coastline and a seafood-loving population, Taiwan maintains one of the world’s highest per capita seafood consumption rates—50 percent above the global average.
In 2024, Taiwan was the eighth-largest market for U.S. agricultural exports, valued at $3.8 billion, 16 percent greater than 5 years ago. The top five U.S. agricultural exports to Taiwan are beef and beef products, soybeans, corn, wheat, and fresh fruits.
Taiwan's overall seafood imports declined to US$1.9 billion in 2023, down 11 percent from 2022. Seafood exports from the United States, however, grew by 40 percent, and amounted to nearly US$45 million. Among the top ten foreign suppliers, the United States is the only one that expanded exports.
Effective January 1, 2024, Taiwan reduced the number of U.S. seafood products eligible for export to Taiwan. The change reduces the number of eligible seafood HS codes from 65 to 55.
Taiwan’s overall seafood imports reached US$2.1 billion in 2022, up 20 percent from 2021, with imports from the United States decreasing slightly to US$32 million.
Taiwan is the United States' eighth-largest export market for food and agricultural products and 18th largest market for seafood products, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.
