Colombia remains open to the adoption of biotech-derived commodities and innovative technologies. Area planted to GE (genetically engineered) corn grew 14 percent and GE cotton increased 6 percent from 2018. The Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) recently assessed two genome edited products and determined they fall under the existing regulatory framework for conventional products. The Colombian government and stakeholders have to finalize discussions on biotechnology regulations regarding low-level presence (LLP), GE labeling, and GE seeds to stabilize Colombia’s regulatory environment for GE products.
