  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

Health, wellness and the environment continue to be major focuses among Australian consumers. Portion sizes are increasingly important as consumers want quality over quantity and they expect packaging to be informative and environmentally responsible. The economy is strong and growing and the market presents an excellent opportunity for U.S. exporters. The value of food and liquor retailing in Australia grew by 3 percent in 2016 to reach US$91 billion. Supermarket and grocery expenditure accounts for the bulk of food retailing sales, with a share of 62 percent. The U.S. accounted for US$1.5 billion or 14.9 percent of all consumer oriented, fish, and seafood product imports in 2016.
